Unlocking Cultural Capital in Art and Design

In 2020 the NSEAD Special Interest Group for Cultural Capital, invited art educators to share in a short film what cultural capital looks like – or might look like – in art education, in the cultural sector and in the community. At the start of the pandemic, and during Lockdown #1, many teachers and art educators responded to this call out, by sharing – individually and collectively – what cultural capital means, who is privileged by cultural capital and how it can be embedded in art and through art education.

The article examines what cultural capital means and how the films define and exemplify cultural capital. Sarah has also shared how the films were organised by the Special Interest Group.

Thank you to Sarah Phillips (Chair), Susan Coles, Sue Gibbons, Anne-Louise Quinton, Clare Stanhope and Lolly Stewart-Thomas for your expertise and commitment which made these films possible. Thank you to all the film makers who sent in their films.

A message from Bob and Roberta Smith

In partnership with NSEAD's colleagues at the Campaign for Drawing we commissioned a film of our patron Bob and Roberta Smith talking about why we must teach art and design in schools.

Dr Rachel Payne's National Conference 2019 presidential address

At the 2019 NSEAD National Conference 'Shaping the Future', Dr Rachel Payne gave her presidential address: 'Art, craft and design education: Our unique contribution'. The address and paper explores how we can facilitate types of learning in and through art, craft and design in an education fit for the 21C. Payne argues that 'pedagogies of uncertainty' can help art educators to achieve this.
