All pupils need at least the primary colours and white, a large palette on which to mix the colours, a container of water, a brush, a sponge and some tinted sugar paper.
Demonstrate to pupils the routine of putting brush in water, blotting off excess on the sponge, picking up a colour and putting it in the mixing palette, washing the brush, blotting, picking another colour and mixing it with the first in the palette. Then dab the brush-load on the paper. Continue with this exercise, placing the second colour next to the first, and so on. This can be done with children from nursery upwards.
Challenge pupils to make as many colours as they can. ( Some pupils aged from 5 to 7 years can make as many as fifty, and more.) These experiments can be pinned on the wall and discussed.
