Encouraging children to be more aware of tone
The exercises outlined in this unit are designed to encourage children to be more aware of tone. Following some discussion and sensory experience, the children are asked to work on some monochromatic tonal gradation exercises with various media. Tonal exercises with colour is a suggested development of this work.
"There are some dark places in the classroom. Where are the darkest places? Look around. Why are these places dark? Where are the lightest places in the classroom? Where can you see light? Where is the light coming from? What will happen when we turn the lights out? Where can you see shadows? Look for shadows in the classroom. How can we make more shadows?"
